Many times I get asked what is the ideal height I should mow my grass. I usually will responds with "What type of grass do you have?"

You see, the ideal cutting height depends on several factors, including the type of grass, the time of year, and the desired appearance of the lawn.

The ideal cutting height for most grass types are between 2.5 to 4 inches. Here are some considerations for the most common grass types I see in the Tampa Bay area:

  1. Pensacola Bahia grass:

    1. Many forums indicate to cut Bahia between 1.5 to 3 inches (4 to 7.5 centimeters). However, I prefer to cut them at a height of 2.5 to 3 inches (6.3 to 10 centimeters). I find that at this height you leave the lawn looking plush and avoids too much root exposure.

  2. St. Augustine grass:

    1. Many forums indicate to cut this St. Augustine between 1.5 to 3 inches (4 to 7.5 centimeters). However, I prefer to cut them at a height of 3 to 4 inches (7.5 to 10 centimeters). I find that at this height you promote better root growth and protect against moisture loss.

Depending on the terrain some of these heights require some modification, but in all cases, Avoid scalping. It's important not to cut the grass too short, as this can stress the grass, expose the soil to excessive sunlight, and promote weed growth. Scalping occurs when you remove more than one-third of the grass blade in a single mowing or you mow below the recommended height.

  1. It's generally recommended to mow frequently enough to remove only about one-third of the grass height at each mowing.

If you are unsure of the height, always start at the highest setting.
